Community Highlight: Grow Hope Alberta

MCC Alberta partners with Canadian Foodgrains Bank (CFGB) and Alberta farmers to help support MCC food programs worldwide.

I wanted to spotlight this amazing non profit organization that aims to support farmers in impoverished countries.

Every year, Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) partners with local Albertan farmers, Canadian Food Grains Bank (CFGB), the Government of Canada, and YOU, in order to GROW and SELL crops, in order to:

How it Works:

In October 2020, the World Bank estimated that between 88 and 115 million MORE vulnerable people would be pushed into extreme poverty due to COVID-19.

Today, over 821 million people are suffering from severe food insecurity due to conflict, inequality, geography, poverty, and climate change.

Every dollar in support of Grow Hope works to provide conservation agriculture training, tools, and emergency food relief to families and communities around the world facing severe food insecurity. Thanks to the generosity of Alberta farmers and Canadian government matching through MCC’s partnership with Canadian Foodgrains Bank (CFGB), donations are matched up to 4x upon the sale of crops at harvest!

If you sign up to sponsor an acre of land—or even part of an acre—a local farmer will farm the land you sponsor and donate the proceeds after harvest. One acre costs $300 (this covers the cost of seeds, fuel and other inputs required to farm the land),  but whether you sponsor ten acres or a tenth of an acre, your gift will grow, and you’ll help provide food for people who need it most.

Farmers will grow crops for a FoodGrains Bank member. Depending on the crop being grown, it will cost $300, $400 or $500 an acre for seed and other inputs. During the growing season, you will receive field updates on the crop you are sponsoring. Once the crops are harvested, farmers will sell them and donate the entire proceeds to that member’s account at the FoodGrains Bank.

Join us in growing hope today!

Ways to Get Involved:

1. Sponsor an Acre(s).

Sponsor a quarter, a half, one, or multiple acres of Alberta farmland.

Tangibly sow seeds of hope that will be multiplied up to 4 times at the end of the harvesting season. One acre costs $300 to farm.

No matter the size of your gift, your support will GROW to give security and hope to women, children, and men suffering from severe hunger.

2. Spread Seeds of HOPE.
